2021 Feature Artist: JASON RAINVILLE

"Jason Rainville is a freelance fantasy and sci-fi illustrator from Massey. His work has appeared in role-playing games, trading card games, and book covers.
His art infuses fantasy with an historical and/or mythological feel, striving to evoke scenes that are larger than life in grand but subtle ways. Mystery, surprise, revelation, fear, camaraderie and loss are among the diverse themes prevalent in his work. A strong narrative, character moments, a solid sense of form and sometimes formal composition play a large part in many of Jason's pieces."

Admiral Beckett Brass
In one of his most treasured pieces, Jason cast his mother Valerie Rainville as the model for the confident pirate Admiral. Created for Magic: The Gathering's Pirate/Indigenous South American/Dinosaur setting "Ixalan", this piece depicts Beckett taking a ship along with her loyal crew (modelled by her brother Curtis, daughter Jessica and the artist, Jason). Valerie had encouraged Jason all his life with his artistic endeavors, often referring back to a pirate ship he drew as a child that she felt showed promise. It was fitting that it came full circle with Jason's depiction of her as the prominent pirate. After Valerie's passing, it was a comfort to Jason to remember that she had seen the character and the story of her creation gain popularity in the Magic: the Gathering community; Valerie was sometimes asked for her autograph on the collectible cards, was asked to do a voice-over for the character, and even saw the character cosplayed. |
Professor of Symbology
Jason was able to channel his love of narrative art, specifically the golden age of illustration art of Norman Rockwell, in this magical slice-of-life piece. He tried to express the colours, stroke making and sensibilities of Rockwell's art as he painted a mystical scene showing a professor instructing an enraptured group of students. Xanathar's Guide to Everything
Jason's first cover for the popular tabletop roleplaying game Dungeons & Dragons was a fun challenge, especially as he searched for and photographed reference material. The sinister Beholder crime boss Xanathar gazes lovingly at his giant koi goldfish while on his desk are strewn some familiar items-turned-magical artifacts; Jason's uncle's brass horse, great-grandfathers telescope, sister's cowboy boots (of speed!), grandma's Egyptian-style jewelry box, and some items bought at value village in Sudbury. Quench
Sometimes it's not about epic, world-ending monsters and magic. Sometimes it's just an expression. One of Jason's favourite things to depict is emotion and facial expressions, and the very subtle, surprised, confident smirk of this Magic Card's character was a challenge. It took a lot of planning and painting, but it was worth it to achieve a face that screams "Is that it?" Ardenn, Intrepid Archeologist
Cross a grey-skinned Kor from Magic the Gathering with Indiana Jones and what you might get is Ardenn. Jason's high-flying contribution to the trading card game was helped with a lot of natural lighting gained from outdoor reference pictures. |
Irencrag Pyromancer
Fire is one of the most difficult yet rewarding things for Jason to paint, and Irencrag Pyromancer (featured in MTG's fairy-tale setting "Eldraine") had lots of it. This is one of the few forest scenes that the artist had a fun time painting; usually it's a struggle to determine how specific or vague each leaf and branch should be. Mordenkainen's Tome of foes
Glimpses of the master magician can be seen through gaps in his monstrous, logic-defying orrery. A simple 3d model was created as scaffolding to help with perspective, but it still took a great deal of time to paint in the details of Jason's second D&D cover. Mythic Odysseys Of Theros
A gigantic cosmic Hydra smashes through an abandoned city as the hero Haktos defends himself in Jason's 3rd D&D cover. Jason's love of mythology was let loose in this Greek-mythology inspired setting first seen in Magic: The Gathering; he meticulously shot reference for all the hydra heads using a t-rex toy, and created a 3d model to assist in the perspective of the buildings. Ardenvale Tactician
This was a relatively simple illustration for Jason to complete, but sometimes a simple, classic composition is best. A full profile view of the Griphon-riding knight helped speak to the timelessness of the fairy-tale trope. Rest in Peace
Sometimes heroes die, and when prominent Planeswalker Gideon died in the Magic: The Gathering storyline, he was remembered on his Greek inspired home plane of Theros with a courtyard and statue. Flowers piled at the base show he's remembered, and the creeping starfield to the top right hint at the beyond. |
