Massey Area Museum - Proposed New Building

2011
Our
History:
The Massey
Area Museum began in 1967 when the Massey Public Library
Board set up a display of historical pictures and artifacts
which were on loan by residents.
By the summer of that year the Museum was set up on
the unused second floor of the library and a Museum Board
was formed the following year.
In 1971 the library was slated for demolition and the
Museum leased a new location at 160 Sauble Street.
The building was formerly a hotel which required
extensive modifications to make it suitable.
The Museum was incorporated as a non-profit
organization in 1976 and, with a Government Grant and
fundraising, the Museum was able to purchase the building.
The Museum board has made extensive improvements over
the years; however the space is no longer adequate.
In 2002 an anonymous area resident donated funds to
purchase the adjoining property for the Museum.
The Museum Board has been working towards improving
the Museum to its fullest potential. The existing building
is at the mercy of time.
Our
Campaign:
The cost of
the New Building is estimated at $800,000.00. We need
to raise at least $200,000.00 from local and private sources to be
eligible for the balance in additional Government
funding. We are currently visiting and writing to
local businesses and Foundations across Canada for support.
